Opti Program


OPTI NIGHT CLASS: Opti Seaman

(Beginner, ages 6 & 7, Students must be 6 by May 1st)

Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6pm-8:30pm  |  June 19 - July 26

This 6-week evening class is geared toward our youngest sailors with emphasis on FUN. Students are introduced to water safety, boat controls (main sheet and tiller), basic sailing maneuvers like tacking and gybing, and wind through classroom and on-the-water activities aboard Optimist dinghies (Optis). The goal of the Opti Seaman class is to create a positive learning environment so that children are excited to sail.

  1. Parents are encouraged to volunteer during the program and are welcomed to watch lessons.
  2. Class size is limited to 14 children.
  3. Cost: *$315 (includes t-shirt and banquet admission for enrolled students)

OPTI DAY CLASS: Opti Mate

(Beginner & Intermediate, ages 8-10, Students must be 8 by May 1st)

Session A: Monday/Wednesday 9am-4pm (June 11 - August 1) SOLD OUT
Session B: Tuesday/Thursday 9am-4pm (June 12 - August 2)

This 8-week class is for younger sailors that want to participate in the traditional all-day program with an emphasis on FUN. Students will independently sail in our Optimist dinghies under the close supervision of instructors and participate in daily classroom lessons and on-the-water activities.

The curriculum includes terminology, basic seamanship (knot tying, rigging), basic boat handling (steering, sail trim, capsize recovery), and course sailing.

Lessons also feature STEM concepts such as understanding wind, small machines, the physics of sailing, water quality, and more.

Activities:

  • Field trip to Erie Maritime Museum or Brig Niagara or US Coast Guard Station or Tom Ridge Environmental Center
  • Ice Cream Social
  • Pajama Day
  • Theme events such as Pirate Day and Big Boat Day
  • Mondays and Tuesdays are pizza days (pizza will be ordered for lunch on these days at an additional cost)
  • End of the year sailing banquet
  • Explorer Boating: stand-up-paddle boards and kayaks

Class size is limited to 17 children.

Junior Day Class

(Beginner and Intermediate, ages 10-16, Student must be 10 by May 1st)

Session A: Monday/Wednesday 9am-4pm (June 11 - August 1)
Session B: Tuesday/Thursday 9am-4pm (June 12 - August 2)
Session C: Fridays 9am-4pm (June 15 - August 3)
Session D: Monday/Wednesday/Friday 9am-4pm (June 11-August 3)
Session E: Tuesday/Thursday/Friday 9am-4pm (June 12-August 3)

This 8-week class introduces children to the basics of sailing aboard Club 420s, Lasers, J/22s, and catamarans with an emphasis on FUN and teamwork. The curriculum, tailored to students’ sailing experience, includes terminology and rigging, wind and water theory, safety, boat controls, sailing maneuvers, points of sail, knot tying, and rules of the road.

As students progress, lessons will also feature sail trim, capsize recovery, course sailing, introduction to the spinnaker, and beginner racing. Students will become proficient in monohull dinghy sailing but will also have the opportunity to sail aboard J/22s to experience one-design “big boat” sailing.
