Optimist Programs (Ages 6 - 12)

Opti Starter (Beginner, ages 6-8) This class is geared for our youngest sailors with an emphasis placed on safety, learning, and fun! Students are introduced to water safety, boat controls (main sheet and tiller), basic sailing maneuvers (tacking and jibing), and wind, through classroom and on-the-water activities.  Our goal is to create a positive learning environment so our little ones are excited to sail. Mon/Wed evening 6 - 8:30pm.

Opti Learn-to-Sail (Beginner, ages 8-10) This 8-week class is for our youngest sailors who want to participate in our traditional all day program. Students sail independently in our Optimist dinghies under the close supervision of instructors and participate daily in classroom lessons and land-based activities. The curriculum emphasizes terminology, basic seamanship (knot tying, rigging), basic boat handling (steering, sail trim, capsize recovery) and course sailing. Classes are full day sessions that run 2 days per week. Mon/Wed or Tues/Thurs 9am-4pm.

New! Opti Learn-To-Race (Intermediate, ages 9-12) This 8-week class is for sailors who have successfully completed at least one year of beginner sailing and want to learn how to race the Opti. Students sail independently in the Optimist and learn basic course sailing, mark rounding, weight placement, and an introduction to racing.  Students may be asked to participate in area Optimist regattas under parental supervision with Club supported coaches.  Classes are full day sessions that run on Fridays. Friday 9am-4pm.

FJ/420 Racing Program (Ages 13-18)

Learn- to-Race/ Race Team
This program offers a positive team setting where young sailors can learn and apply advanced racing skills. Racing Team members begin their day with a general meeting and review of the previous practice. On-land, sailors participate in lectures and land drills emphasizing a key skill each day. On-the-water, coaches direct the team through a series of practice drills and mini races. A debrief session concludes the practice. The Racing Team trains for a summer-long schedule of competitions, which include regattas (multi-race events) and clinics. Sailors are chosen for these events based on ability, attitude, and parent participation. Additional expenses for travel to regattas will be the responsibility of the sailor. Must have Skipper Rating.
